UFO Challenge 2011

As I write this out I am thinking why am I going to sign up for the UFO challenge at Patchwork Times. Maybe because everyone else was? Well I do not need to always do what everyone else does. This past year has been my UFO challenge year and I'm down to three. To me a top is no longer a UFO once it's been completed into a quilt top. I have separate categories in my data base for the next stages in the tops life and this system works for me. In going through my list, I only have three UFO's, three that have been cut out and ready to start, eight to be quilted, six at the quilter and three that needs the binding on. The ones to be quilted need backs and I am in no rush to be quilted. So I do not think I need to join and will plug along my way.

Design Wall Monday

It's Monday night and I kept thinking all day to post my progress on my Storm at Sea. I was about to wrap some gifts and said no do this first. So here it is. Still need to attach the bottom three rows together and figure out the borders. maybe this week I can finish it.

I also am posting a quilt I made for
someone that just needed a quilt. I have never met her but know her Dad. The pattern is modified from a pattern I saw in a resent magazine. The main fabric is butterflies. I got a wonderful thank you card in today's mail. Just made my day.

Design Wall Monday

I actually have something on my design wall to post. It's from a workshop given by Wendy Mathson my guild put on a few months ago. It was a different way of doing Storm at Sea. It was done with rulers. I have the top three rows sewn in together. It always amazes me how much the seam allowance take up.

Long time counting

It's been a while that I counted let alone posted to this. I fell off the wagon in counting and reporting after my birthday in October Then went to Houston where I added to my stash a bit. Not much, I was good. In trying to figure out my report, I found one that was never posted so I am not doing as bad as I thought. This past few weeks I've made a quick quilt and plus the backs for two smaller quilts tops. But hey it all counts.

Design Wall Monday

This was actually finished at my quilt retreat last week but I wanted to show it completed. I am very happy with how it turned out. With the help of my friend Kerstin, there are over 100 different greens in this quilt. I realize some might look brown but they really are all green.

Stash Buster reports

It's been a few weeks since I reported in as I had a birthday and been adding to my stash and only little busting. After going to PIQF today I felt it was time to report. I did very well for going to a mega quilt show. Only bought a yard and a fat quarter and both are for projects.

Design Wall Monday

The same blocks are on the design wall but with lots of progress made. All the nine patches are made and the rows are sewn together. Need to cut the setting triangles and some two inch squares to make the borders. At this time the quilt does not any two same green blocks. That will change as I still need about 27 additional setting triangles. As I only need a 7 3/4" square to make it the triangle and two 2" squares, my friend Kerstin, who is the inspiration for this quilt, said I could come raid her stash of green fabric so I can have more variety. The first picture is an over all of how it's looking. The second picture is the bottom right hand corner that has the corner sewn together. I can not wait to raid Kerstin's stash and finish it. It's been fun to make.

Design Wall Monday

A friend of mine LOVES the color green and makes most of her quilts using green fabric. She does amazing work and her quilts are wonderful. One of them I love so much it has inspired me to make one using the same pattern. I started last year cutting out different green squares. The white in the 9 patches are all the same fabric. This past Friday, we laid it out on my design wall. This quilt is outside my box as I do not do scrap quilts which this one is. I am enjoying doing this one but still struggling with the scrappy part of it.

Stash Report 9/26/2010

Not a bad week. I did go to a quilt show and bought one Sweet Treat pack and then one yard of a wonderful red for the center block of a log cabin quilt I plan on doing soon. A friend come over to help lay out Green Quilt #6 (pictures tomorrow). As she is going to make a purple quilt , I went through my fabric to see if any of my purples would work. A few did, so I shared. In going through my stash, I found some other fabric that really wanted to go home with her, so I let it. Fabric neither one of wanted will be saved and given to my quilt guild's cast off off table to find a new home.

Design Wall Monday 9/13/2010

This past week I had not one but two irons give up the ghost on me. I liked the Rowenta and wonder if it's worth repairing. Tried calling the service center as it's close enough to drive to but so far no call back. So I broke down and bought new iron. I finally sat down and worked on my Halloween quilt from last week. Not much progress was made as I've been trying to finish the binding of the red, white and blue quilt so I can send it off. I did take a fun class put on by my guild on Saturday. It's a different was of doing Storm at Sea. You use rulers instead of templates or paper piecing. That's what the funny shaped blocks on the right hand side of the design wall. The top two are the diamond ones that are completed.

Design Wall Monday

Haven't had much to show on design wall Monday for a few weeks as I did some quick quilts. I thought I'd post pictures of them and what is on my design wall for today. The red, white and blue quilt is for my Aunt. My Uncle recently passed away and this is in honor of him being in Korea years ago. At the funeral, there was 2 honor guards and taps was played. I could tell his service time was important to her so I made this in these colors for that.

The next three tops are donation tops. I try to make a donation top every other month. Some one had a link to this pattern from Maryquilts.com. The pattern is called Quick Strippie and it sure is.

For this weeks design wall Monday, I have the beginning of a Halloween quilt. I bought the kit years ago and as I am trying to really use my stash this year I pulled it out. Got it all cut out and even started. This the pile of fabric before I started cutting and the second photo is it all cut out with the center panel.

Added a bit of fabric this week. At least some was for the backing and of a quilt for my Aunt that is completed and at the quilters. Some was just because my local quilt store was having a sale and I love it.

Stash Report 8/29/10

Well another good week of stashing busting. I have decided changed how I am keeping track of my stash busting. I added a new column so I can keep track of the fabric I have donated, given away for either gifts or just because or even sold. I titled the category donated. I know it's for everything I have not personally used.

Design Wall Monday 8/16/10

I can not believe I actually made design wall Monday on a Monday with something to show. I took the picture this afternoon and now all 16 blocks are done. I think I am going to donate them to my quilt guilds auction in October. I made the pattern after seeing the typical jar blocks. I wanted to do something a bit different.

Stash Report 8/15/10

What a good week as I hit the 100 yards used mark. I did have 2 yards added that were gifts yet I still counted it. Now my next goal is to use 100 yards from my stash alone. That might take a some time as after I finish the quilt on my design wall, I know what I want to start and that might take a while.

Design Wall Monday 8/9/10

As having finished my Houston mystery I did a quick quilt top for a donation quilt for Marin Cat Connection. It's from the pattern "Just Can't Cut It". I got it done in one evening. I'm posting a picture more for show and tell as it was only on my design wall for a very short time. This is the fabric before I cut it up and the next picture is the top. As I did not have enough for the border I left it off. Besides, the quilt was getting to be a bit big.

For design wall Monday, I have the first row of a quilt. As I had cut the corners to use another pattern that didn't work. I regrouped and making this instead. I'll add a border or two and have a cute baby quilt when I need one. This is what the quilt looks like all finished. It's a nice baby quilt. The best part is both these tops were done from my stash. Plus I have backs to go with both!

Stash Report 8/8/10

Made 4 more pillowcase kits this week. Finished up a ufo from 2003. My Houston mystery. After finally getting that done I did this years cat quilt for Marin Cat Connection. I enjoyed making some thing so easy but looks good. I did fall of the wagon and get some fabric to add to some I already had. It was the last my local store had and it was on sale.

Design Wall Monday

Yet again it's Tuesday and I'm posting for design wall Monday. I have been making good progress on my quilt blocks. There are now 23 out of 35 done along with the border. This is just a small sampling of the blocks as my design wall will not hold them all. This will not be the layout I was just seeing how the will look.

Stash Report 7/18/10

Not a real productive week for stash busting but did pull fabric for pillowcases. Now need to cut them and sew them so I can report them out of my stash. I am trying to finish my oldest UFO. Did make progress on it last week but not enough to show it on design wall Monday.

Design wall Monday (on Tuesday)

I finally have something on my design wall to show. It was from a mystery class I took at Huston in 2007. Since I will be going again, I am determined to get it done before I go. At first I didn't like it but it's starting to grow on me.

Things are getting done

I haven't taken many pictures lately but I am getting things finished. I started a quilt challenge for next April and the top is done. I need a class sample and the top now completed, as is a thread catcher. Plus working on a pair of slippers and a pair of socks that are coming along nicely.

Found My Sewing Machine

After a month or so of not sewing I spent some quality time with my machine this week. I had to do some embroidery labels, finish up a gift, worked on my Uncle's quilt and even made a name tag for my quilt guild. I also got a quilt back made and three others ready to go to the quilters. So not a bad week. Need to spend more time finishing up projects.

I missed last weeks were I only used 3 yards. This past week was worse as I used nothing. I did learn to knit socks and have been having fun.

This is the start of a quilt for my Uncle's 70th birthday. He really likes western theme, so I thought the cowboy boots would be perfect. All the strip sets sewn together and now to finishing cutting them out. I cut two sets out so I could see how they were going to look.

Design Wall Monday ( on Wednesday)

I am finally able to download pictures from my new camera to my computer so I can post on design wall Monday. I had some thing on my wall that is now finished so I decided to post it late. Since I am on the stash buster's diet, I pulled from my stash to make a donation top. I was able to make two tops out of the fabric, plus a pillow case.

The start of the top. All the fabric. The fabric in the back of the picture is for the backing.
Top one on my design wall

The two tops completed.

New Year New Goals

As this is a new year, I am making my new sewing goals. I have already made a list of UFO's to finish in 2010. I have even worked on it. Another goal is to make more donation tops than last year. Plus I am going to post on Judy Laquidara Stash Report 2010. So far nothing to report but that's ok.

I'm sure most of you have read about the 1 million pillowcases project with All People Quilt--if not please read about it on the Heartstrings Quilt Project page. Mary has a great tutorial. I would like to make some every month. What a great way to use up some stash for a good project.

I did get a ufo table runner top done.
